Getting a fire department out of spreadsheets.
Shift-based payroll was running on manual workarounds. Every correction cost administrative hours, and every spreadsheet was a place for an error to hide.
What we did
Mapped the actual payroll workflow, including the informal workarounds staff had built to make it function.
Identified which steps were worth automating first, measured in admin hours recovered and error risk removed.
Designed an automation-first MVP: the smallest system that removes the most manual handling.
Sequenced the rest into a phased roadmap the department could fund in stages.
Why it mattered
Public-sector teams rarely get to buy their way out of a process problem. The value was in a plan that fits real budget cycles and doesn't require replacing everything at once.
